Additional thought of Graham White in highlights.

How To Get Along With People

  1. Don't criticize, condemn or complain.

  2. Give honest and sincere appreciation.

  3. Look for and inspire the best in others.  (They may be a remarkable success, despite how they appear to you.  You don't know how far down they were when they started).

How To Get People To Like You

  1. Smile.

  2. Remember that a person's name and use it every time you see them.

  3. Make the other person feel important - and do it sincerely.

  4. Listen more than you talk and do it even when what they're talking about isn't interesting to you.

  5. When you do talk, try to talk about what the other person is interested in.

Win people to your way of thinking

  1. Begin in a friendly way.

  2. Again, listen more than you talk.

  3. Work at seeing things from their point of view.

  4. Ask questions that have "Yes" answers.

  5. Let the other person feel that the idea is his or hers.  Don't present it as your idea, present it as simply an idea worth considering.

  6. Show respect for the other person's opinions. Never say, "You're wrong."

  7. Remember the only way to win an argument is to avoid it.

  8. If you are wrong, admit it quickly and emphatically.

Lead By Inspiration Rather Than Control

A leader's job often includes shaping people's attitudes and behavior. Some suggestions to accomplish this:

  1. Begin with praise and honest appreciation.

  2. Call attention to people's mistakes indirectly.

  3. Talk about your own mistakes before criticizing the other person.

  4. Ask questions instead of giving direct orders.

  5. Let the other person save face.

  6. Praise the slightest improvement and praise every improvement.

  7. Give the other person a fine reputation to live up to.

  8. Use encouragement. Make the fault seem easy to correct.

  9. Create a positive incentive for the other person to do the thing you suggest.
