** YOU NEED MORE THAN PASSION by Graham White **
----------------------------------------------------
I believe with all
my heart that there is greatness within each one of us. The trouble with
tapping into that greatness is that we have to uncover it and we
have to develop it before it becomes apparent.
I enjoy watching
some of the reality TV shows because they allow me to be a voyeur into the
minds of people I wouldn't otherwise get to know. I didn't watch the
first American Idol, because frankly, I'm not very interested in the
concept. I chose to watch it this time to see why some people are
successful, why some people aren't and how each of them deals with adulation
and rejection.
I saw a tremendous
range in the accuracy of the contestants self-perception. Some had humility
and tremendous talent. Others had virtually no singing talent, but large
over-sensitive egos. The contestants with the biggest egos seemed to be
the ones to have their entire hopes pinned to their "one
shot." It was as if they didn't make it that one time, nothing
in life would ever work out for them.
The reality is; we
all have talent, natural ability and passion. Our talent and ability may
not match our current passion, but if we uncover our true talents and become
passionate about them, our real purpose will begin to shine
through.
What it has to
shine through is the result of our personal development, or lack of it.
You either need to work on your area of weakness, or hope that the quality of
your talent can shine through despite of it. I recommend building your
weakest areas.
Are you 100 lbs
overweight? -- It will have to shine through that.
Are you
obnoxious? -- It will have to shine through that.
Are you fashion illiterate?
-- It will have to shine through that.
Are you
disconnected? -- It will have to shine through that.
Are you a poor
money manager? - It will have to shine through that.
Are you
disorganized? -- It will have to shine through that.
Are you
uneducated? -- It will have to shine through that.
Are you spiritually
empty? -- It will have to shine through that.
Are you timid? --
It will have to shine through that.
There is nothing
more frightening than honestly assessing your level of development in each of
these areas. If you knew how to do better, chances are you would already
be working on it. Why would you take a long hard look at yourself, only
to find out you're weak in some areas and don't know what you can do about
them once you acknowledge they are there?
If you take that
step, if you decide that you're willing work on finding the answers, if you
recognize that the hardest thing you will ever do is address the areas of your
life you are weakest, you will succeed.
Passion alone will
never create success. It
will involve pain and failure, but "getting real" about where you're
at is the only road to true fulfillment and success.
I have been
developmentally delayed in virtually every area my entire life. Some
areas I've gotten a handle on, but not without the pain. Some areas I
still struggle with and feel like I may never figure out. But still, I'm
determined to go through the process because I see how much the benefits
outweigh the pain.
You don't have to
be talented at what you have a passion for. You can enjoy your passion
fully without it being the focus of your identity. If you love to sing,
but you're not a natural singer, go out with friends to Karaoke every
Wednesday night. If you're pretty good, you'll probably win some
money. If you're really lousy, but you still love it, let it all hang
out! You'll walk away knowing you put a smile on everyone's face and
possibly even inspired someone who has the same passion and level of talent to
not be afraid to enjoy what they love!
I know that
information on many of the specific steps doesn't seem to be available. My
passion is working on creating the details of the steps in each area of our
journey. Having made the steps myself in so many of the areas, I am
inspired to offer the wisdom of that journey to those who are searching.
Remember too,
you're not limited to doing one thing in life, or even one thing at a
time. Uncover and use your talents in the service of others including
your boss, or your customers. There's nothing wrong for getting paid for
what you're great at. If you have passions that you're not talented at,
enjoy those too, just don't expect to be paid or recognized for them they way
you are for your talents.
