** SUCCEED BY DEFAULT by Graham White **
----------------------------------------------------
Set up your life so
that you succeed by default. If you have a difficult time remembering to do
certain things, create a system so that they happen without having to remember
them. The concept is fairly simple, it's the implementation that's
challenging.
You can't change what you don't acknowledge. Admit that you have a hard time doing something, regardless of how
simple, and set up a system that forces you to do it or remember it.
Do you have trouble waking up on time? Instead of just setting one
alarm, set one in your room and set another one to go off in
your children's room or a siren outside in the
neighborhood. Suddenly there's new motivation.
Have trouble going to bed on time? On the internet? Watching TV late? Install
a powered cable link that's on a timer that cuts off your cable connection at
a certain time, or have the wake up service call you and tell you to GO TO
BED!
Do you have trouble handling your money? Set up an account that you can't
access and have your checks deposited automatically. Have all your bills come
out automatically and only be allowed to take out a prearranged amount each
month for discretionary spending. Get a credit card that has to be PREPAID if
you are always in debt. Set up your life so that it is IMPOSSIBLE to fail
where you are weak. Who cares how you do it, as long as you succeed!
You're ALWAYS in control. Get creative and figure out the fail-proof system
for YOU. Only you know what that is. Don't worry about what anyone else says,
or the feeling that "If you were just more responsible you'd get it
done". Create the system that forces you to DO IT!
CREATING SUCCESS:
I have ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). I have a hard time
remembering details and getting myself to do simple things. If it's important
for me to remember something...
-
I
may put it in front of my door so I have to walk over it when I get up.
-
I set all kinds of alarms so that I don't forget important times and dates.
-
I make a habit of taking out the garbage after my Tuesday night meeting so
that I don't have to remember it Wednesday morning.
-
If I need to remember to take something with me, I put it on the table under
my keys so that I remember it, or put it in the vehicle
even sooner.
-
I love having a clean vehicle, but I hate cleaning it. My rule is no eating
or drinking in the vehicle and to take garbage out when I stop.
-
I ask people to remind me of important things ALL THE TIME. I know I forget a
lot, I admit it and ask for lots of help.
-
When I had employees, I made sure they told me what they needed AND wrote it
on the board on my door (and then reminded me to READ THE BOARD).
GET EXTREME! Who cares what people think. Your SUCCESS is worth so much more
than your EGO.
